There is a saying that mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun…well today in london it’s 35 degrees Celsius, 95 Fahrenheit, and that is not normal for us and frankly people are struggling in the heat but London carries on regardless, and it’s civic citizens donned colourful clothes better suited to the cold winter to take part in a special election - the mid summer election of sheriffs.
The office of Sheriff is one of the oldest civic offices in the City of London and is recorded in the laws of the Anglo Saxon period in the seventh century. Perhaps we are mad but it’s a wonderful connection to our history and the modern role of sheriffs presiding for example over our central criminal court makes them important part of our city.
