James meets students

Education and training is key to unlocking our children’s potential. I believe in academic and vocational opportunities for all. I also believe we must have effective careers advice as part of our education offering, to give people the best start in life.

Schools & the Academic Path

The City has been evolving its education provision to support a wider range of schools and academies for more information on our Strategy to 2019 please read our strategy paper - http://democracy.cityoflondon.gov.uk/documents/s58071/Appendix%201%20-%20Proposed%20Education%20Strategy%202016%20-%202019.pdf

Apprenticeships

The City of London Apprenticeship programme provides a range of vocational opportunities for young people aged 16-24 living in and around the City.

Apprentices learn job-specific skills and gain valuable work experience while working alongside experienced staff. They also attend regular training days to gain relevant, nationally recognised qualifications. Plus, they earn a wage and get paid holidays, including bank holidays.

To be eligible for the programme, you must be:

  • Between 16-24 years old
  • Eligible to work in England
  • Not in full-time education or educated to level 4 or above

"I have always been passionate about supporting education.  I volunteer to help train students at the Inns of Court, and have often given talks to high school students.  I also taught on the legal skills course at a university in Canada.

Apprenticeships are essential.  It is wrong to look only at classic scholar education, skills are just as important and they are best learnt through work.  They unlock true potential.

Apprenticeships exist in a huge range of industries from pharmaceuticals, to the classic building trades.

I'm delighted that the Smithfield meat market is supporting apprentices to enter butchery.  As Chairman of Markets it is something I'm pleased to encourage.  Find out more here -  http://www.smithfieldmarket.com/smithfield-market-apprenticeship-scheme/

Our communities are the better for apprenticeship opportunities!"
